ADA protects against Ebola-related discrimination

In today's interconnected world, people can travel from one end of the Earth to the other in just a matter of days. While this brings cultures and people closer together, it also helps to spread disease that would otherwise be isolated to one part of the world. With the recent spread of Ebola to the United States, some people have been experiencing discrimination.

Don't get punished for using your medical leave, know your rights

In a recent blog post, this blog examined a Louisiana employee's right to medical leave under the Family Medical Leave Act following the birth or adoption of a child. As we explained in that post, the FMLA gives people to take a leave from work in special cases, like the birth of a child. These rights are essential for people following a new baby and in other medical emergencies.

Family Medical Leave Act and new babies

Welcoming a new child into a family can be a joyous time for a family. It can also be physically demanding. As a result, the new mother often needs to take time away from work in order to recover and bond with the baby. According to the United States Department of Labor, both fathers and mothers have the right to take medical leave following the birth of a baby. This gives the new family time to bond. These rules also apply when a family adopts a child or takes on a foster child.

Amendment highlights age discrimination concerns in Louisiana

On Nov. 4, Louisiana residents will go to the ballot box to vote on a variety of important state-wide issues. These include the election of state and local officials. However, it also includes a decision involving age discrimination. Louisiana voters will be asked to vote on a new constitutional amendment -- Constitutional Amendment No. 5. This amendment will eliminate mandatory retirement ages for judges within the state.
